Today we picked up our baby Silkie chickens. This is a photo looking into the chick nursery at our local feed and seed. Everything was so normal there. Nobody was wearing a mask or gloves. Instead, folks were focused on loading giant bags of seed into trucks and picking out pullets and roosters from the nursery! It was a nice break from the intensity.
Weโve been waiting for spring to add to our flock! And weโve been waiting for months to add silkies. You can only get Silkies here in the spring and summer months.
Silkies are a smaller breed of chicken with feathered feet and a tufted crown. They are known for their sweet disposition and make wonderful pets.

This white one stole our heart with her big black eyes!

Look at this cute black one too!

And a gold one.
These beauties are so much fun right now. ๐ ๐
I miss having chickens! Those are so sweet!

It sounds like yโall used to keep chickens. Nowโs a good time to start a flock again with all the at-home time we have now.

I remember the days of new chicks arriving when I was a child. So exciting. It comes through in your writing. Happy spring.

We have a 9 egg incubator and when we candled them on Wednesday, there are 8 eggs that are viable. We got them from neighbors to introduce a little genetic diversity into our flock! ๐ After these eggs hatch, we’ll get nine more eggs from another flock. If we can get another 5 – 7 hens, we’ll be happy! ๐ And babies are so much fun! ๐
Sorry for the book, but I get excited about this kind of stuff! Thank you for sharing today!

What kinds of hens do you all raise? How many are in your flock?

We have 10 hens and a rooster. The hens are Buff Orphentons, Jersery Giants, and one blue andalusia from at least 5 years ago (the last time a daughter showed chickens at the fair). She’s an old bird, but runs around.
