Fiddle Heads!

Slice of Life 2019: Day 19

Fiddle Heads!

Hidden beneath brown leaves

they push up as little sheathes.

Soft, orange, and hairy —

At first they look scary.

Like a fresh born baby before its bath,

or a drunk at his draught.

A closer look at the tender shoot,

as it erupts from its mother’s root,

reveals a baby fern unraveling,

uncoiling and upwardly traveling,

seedlessly toward the sky,

spindly and spry.

  1. Lovely poem. I was just looking at my ferns today… thinking that I need to clean out some of the brown fronds and open up space for the fiddleheads. Happy Spring!

  2. I hear the word fiddle heads and I think of a scene in the book, “The Trolls”, by Polly Horvath. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a fiddle head before, so your pictures and words worth well worth the read.

    Thank you for sharing today!
